Depression And Exercise – Why You Must Find Time To Exercise If You Are Depressed

Major depression or clinical depression (also known as Major Depressive Disorder or MDD) is a serious medical illness affecting 15 million American adults, or approximately 5 to 8 percent of the adult population. Unlike the unusually normal emotional experiences of transient mood states, major depression is persistent and can significantly interfere with a person’s day to day existence. Behavior, thoughts, physical wellness, moods, and activity levels may all be affected in varying degrees and the resulting disabilities can be very discouraging, especially for people who are generally happy and active.

For me, depression seemed to appear out of nowhere, and with a vengeance. Even though I thought I was coping well in response to some extremely challenging life-lessons, my body and mind rebelled. And as many people are prone to do, I, too, stopped taking time for myself, especially to exercise, when those circumstances began to escalate.

I soon found myself feeling as if I would collapse at any given moment.  People around me couldn’t understand why I wasn’t handling things in my usual Super Woman way, or why I would break into tears for no apparent reason. Even though I wasn’t eating much, my weight was going up and I was sporting bluish-black bags under both my eyes most of the time from lack of sleep. There were literally weeks on end when I could not sleep through an entire night, which, among other things, left me exhausted, unhappy, and achy most of the time. In short, I felt like the world was crashing in on me.

A beloved mentor, who was also a doctor prior to her recent passing, finally cornered me and said, “It’s exercise or some pretty potent drugs. You choose.” The last thing I felt like I wanted to do was exercise; my aversion to Big Pharma, however, won out.

Fortunately, research has indicated that exercise may match drug therapy for treating major depression.  For those of us who prefer not to take medications and are doing our best to remove as many toxins from our lives as possible, this is very good news.

There are numerous reasons to exercise if you are depressed. For me, exercise literally put my life back on course again.

Just a few of the exercise-related changes you, too, may experience:

1.      Increased sense of well being

2.      Increased overall energy levels

3.      Increased oxygenation and blood flow to the body and brain

4.      Natural tension and stress relief

5.      Sense of accomplishment, more self confidence, feeling like you are taking an active role in recovery

6.      Fewer episodes of sleeplessness

7.      Better stabilization of blood sugar

8.      Weight management

9.      Physical strengthening and increased resistance to mood swings

10.   Sense of community with others, self, or nature

If you’re feeling like you may be depressed, visit www.ManageClinicalDepression.com for a free online screening and talk to your doctor or holistic health practitioner about your concerns.  And if you’ve been sidelined by depression, please begin any new exercise program slowly. Just walking a block or two each day is a great start. Persistence is the key. Any regular exercise effort will make a tremendous difference in the way you feel, especially if you’ve been sedentary or bedridden from depression.

Continuous stress can pull you down to the point of no return – stress management will keep you grounded

Stress and Depression

Stress and depression together make a lethal combination. Both put an individual on the path of destruction. While stress is all around us, depression is generally to be found within. For people who have almost never come face to face with stress and depression, feel that ‘it is all in the mind.’ This is a huge myth, because both these problems are very much a reality. In fact, heightened stress and depression manifest in people in the form of a variety of other debilitating symptoms. These symptoms include:

Back ache Muscle cramps Exhaustion Loss of appetite Increase in appetite Sleeplessness Hypertension Loss of sex drive

Dismissing stress and depression as being “all in the mind” may simplify the issue for people with a complete lack of understanding about these problems. As a matter of fact, these symptoms cause somewhat of a chain reaction in the body which makes it very difficult for sufferers to perform their routine daily chores. Cause for much anguish to sufferers, stress and depression, can become to unmanageable that medical attention may be required.

Stress management

Stress can affect both the body and the mind, leading to tiredness, sickness, lack of concentrate or the inability to think clearly. Stress may even lead to mental breakdown.

Life is full of demands and stress is an inevitable part of it. Response to stress is dependent on the autonomous nervous system and calming the nerves is an art that can be acquired with little outside help. Learning the art of relaxation can transform our lives and increase our energy and efficiency levels. Stress management primarily depends on:

Understanding what stress is What causes stress? Its effects on the human body How to avoid stress?

It is important to learn the art of positive stress management and this comes from a well balanced lifestyle backed up relaxation techniques which include:

Stepping back from the stressing situation Using good breathing techniques to your advantage Mental relaxation Eating a well balanced diet in moderation Trying not to be perfect Thinking positive at all times

Moreover, effective stress management also comes from:

Identifying own stress triggers Adopting techniques that work for you Being aware of your symptoms of stress Accepting yourself the way you are Taking timely action to tackle your problems Looking after yourself physically and mentally Being positive, whatever the situation

Stress relief treatment

The first step in stress relief treatment would be to identify the cause of the stress. It may sometimes come from a known source or sometimes it may become extremely difficult to put a finger to the cause. Therefore, stress treatment will almost always start with stress prevention. Removing yourself from the source of stress can help you address the situation; respite from the source of stress can help relieve it.

However, if the source remains unidentified, you can always discuss your situation with your well-wishers. If stress still exists then you may have to talk to your doctor or a mental health counselor. Treatment varies with the symptoms you illustrate. Treatment may involve simple reassurance to inpatient care and evaluation. In addition you may have to undergo:

Careful workup and evaluation Regular exercise program Constant reassurance Biofeedback Counseling if required Medical intervention for physical problems

The Stresses of Debt and How to Deal With Them

Money is a major factor when it comes to stress. Most people who are dealing with stress related issues would tell you that money is a large part of it. Add in an economic downturn and people who have traditionally been able to avoid stress in the past are suddenly bogged down by it.  From depression to sleepless nights and anxiety attacks, there are plenty of stress effects that can show up in a physical form in the body.

In this case there is only one way to get rid of your stress, get rid of the debt. Seems too impossible of a task? That’s only because you’re not looking at it correctly. Here’s how to do it.

Assess Debt

The first thing you need to know is what you really owe and have to deal with. It’s time to pull out the statements for everything from your best credit cards down to your old college loans and add it up to see your overall debt.

Debt Plan

Once you know what you owe, you need to come up with a way to pay for it. This starts as a simple math problem. Once you pay your monthly expenses, how much do you have left? This is what you have to pay down your overall debt with. If the amount you have left barely makes a dent in your debt, you need to look at some ways to make that money go further.

Balance Transfer Credit Cards and Low Interest Credit Cards

One great way to do this is to use some of the best credit cards out there, which are balance transfer credit cards and low interest credit cards. After all, if you can lower or remove the interest you are paying you will be able to get rid of your debt more quickly.

With some of the best balance transfer credit cards you can take all of those other debts and roll them into one lump sum that is on a credit card with no interest. Not all balance transfer credit cards are like this, so make sure to ask for no interest on your transfers.

Low interest credit cards are another option, as these will allow you to keep lower interest rates for all of the purchases you make. If there are some things you automatically charge each month, this will lessen the interest you are paying on them.

Implement Your Plan

Once you come up with a plan, you need to put it into action. Make notes of what you can spend and where you can spend it and keep looking at that list so you can follow it.

Manage Your Stress

The final thing you need to do is manage your stress. While you have a debt plan that will help make your problem go away, that is a long term plan. It will take time. In the short-term look to things like exercise, meditation or creative outlets to lessen your daily stress levels.

ANXIETY. What are the Consequences of Anxiety?

Hello, I am Rod Morgan of The Anxiety Workshop.

When people come to me with their anxiety a question I always think they could ask is, What are the consequences of my anxiety and what could happen as a result of it?

Well, anxiety is all about prolonged nervousness, worry and fear. And when we constantly worry about something, we constantly focus on it. Now, there is an interesting psychological principle here which states that, the more you focus on something, the more you get of it.

So therefore, worrying about something produces a vicious circle. Because the more you worry about something, the worse it gets. The worse it gets, the more you worry about it. And worrying about something of itself won’t make it better.

So this constant worrying about something just adds fire to the vicious circle and this vicious circle can then produce a number of results such as -

– tension

– headaches

– disturbed sleep patterns

– which then produce fatigue

– and the fatigue produces an impaired immune system

– which can then lead to illness

– Anxiety also produces underperformance at work and a lack of self confidence

– and because we are lacking confidence in ourselves, other people begin to lack confidence in us too.

– Anxiety can produce an undermining in our relationships

– and reduced success and enjoyment in recreation.

So therefore it is imperative that people suffering from anxiety seek professional help as soon as possible. If you feel that you are suffering from anxiety, or you feel you know someone who is, I have produced a FREE SET of VIDEOS showing 7 KEY STEPS to BEATING STRESS, ANXIETY and DEPRESSION. Holistic Healing For Stress Management

If you find that you are feeling more and more overwhelmed lately, are frequently getting ill, feel on edge, or feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, it may be time to get help with stress and learn new methods for managing stress and stress relief. While there are numerous stress types that interfere with our daily lives, from the psychological stress caused by relationships to the pressure caused by deadlines and work demands and additional stress caused by financial matters, getting help with stress and managing stress effectively can help you be more at peace, more productive, and improve your mental and physical well being.

There are a number of holistic medicines and alternative medicine practices that can help with stress and eliminate anxiety, depression, and worry in your own life. While exercise and proper nutrition are essential, there are a number of other techniques that take a minimal amount of time to do and can help you to remain balanced and at peace throughout the day.

Aromatherapy has been found to have a number of health benefits for people suffering from a number of mental and physical illnesses, and can not only help with stress, but can also leave you feeling more relaxed and improve your overall mood. One of the strongest aromatherapy scents on the market today is lily of the valley, and it has been found to not only help with stress, but also to alleviate anxiety and improve mood. While a number of calming aromatherapy scents are available as essential oils that can be inhaled throughout the day, something as simple as a scented aromatherapy candle or a fresh essential oil spray throughout your home or office can have a profound effect on your mood throughout the day.

Another important factor to consider when it comes to help with stress is natural nutrition. What you put into your body affects your overall equilibrium and toxins from processed foods, caffeine, and trans fats can interfere with the body’ ability to process increased levels of cortisol and leave you feeling more stressed. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can have a major effect on your overall health, decrease your immune system, and make your more susceptible to illness and disease. It is important to keep your body fueled with the right amount of essential nutrients and avoid as many potential hidden toxins as possible. Added preservatives, sugars, and even contact with certain plastics can all negatively affect your overall health.

Holistic medicines and other over the counter supplements can also help with stress and improve your body’s ability to metabolize fats as well as fight off germs and bacteria. Co-enzyme Q10 is another valuable over the counter supplement that can help with stress, alleviate depression, and also improve the mitochondrial function of cells to repair themselves, further warding off infection and disease.

In addition to daily exercise and meditation and hypnosis centering exercises, it has also been proven that laughter is good medicine, and is another great way to help with stress. If you find that you haven’t laughed in awhile, find a way to get your daily dose of laughter through videos, comics, jokes, or other funny sayings.

5 Quick Ways To Ease Stress, Depression & Anxiety

No ceremony with this article, let’s go straight into five quick ways that will help you find relief from stress, depression and anxiety.

1. Take regular breaks from the firing line. Working hard without regular breaks is a great way to build up stress and tension. Make sure you have at least one 15-minute break in the morning and one in the afternoon as well as at least 20 minutes for lunch. If possible, eat lunch away from your workstation. Equally, if you have a lot to deal with in your life right now, taking a day, or a weekend elsewhere – longer if you can – to get some breathing space will really help. Even just a day away from the firing line will enable you to get some distance from the problems and help you to gather your thoughts.

2. Regular exercise can help relieve stress, depression and anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins into your system and will give you a natural boost. It will also provide you with a break from brooding and dwelling upon problems and troubles – but only if you perform the right kind of exercises. Avoid: Exercises that allow you to brood (weight lifting, jogging, treadmills) and perform exercises that require your full concentration. Competitive sports such as squash, tennis, badminton and circuit training are all excellent examples. It is important that you do not brood when you exercise because although you will be benefiting physically, you are still stressing yourself mentally and the stress, depression and anxiety will worsen.

3. Stop beating yourself up. Self-deprecation is a huge part of stress, depression and anxiety. Each time you beat up on yourself, you will erode confidence and self-esteem. Never tell yourself you’re useless, worthless, stupid, hopeless, boring, ugly, and a loser. Never convince yourself that other people hate you, that others find you difficult to be around and that you’re better off being alone. You would never deem it acceptable to say such things to other people and you must deem it equally unacceptable to say them to yourself. These words and phrases are powerful and they will hurt you. Accept you’re not perfect and that you make mistakes – just like everybody else does – and cut yourself some slack. From this day, make a pact with me to never indulge self-deprecation ever again. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE.

4. Isolation is another problem experienced by stress, depression and anxiety sufferers. OK, there will be times when you just want your own company. During such times, you can brood over and over again on problems and events and beat yourself up for hours on end. Not good. Instead, use isolation more positively. Occupy your mind by tackling a jigsaw puzzle, a logic problem, a crossword, read a book or perform a hobby such as painting, playing a musical instrument or whatever it is you have an interest in. In this way, isolation will help you to grow instead of causing you further pain.

5. Television, radio and newspapers can all supply you with a daily hit of negativity and help lower your mood. In the main, they concentrate on the negative side of life: crime, corruption, war, scandal and natural disasters and can give you a distorted view of reality. Not to mention the amount of image manipulation they subject you to. Give yourself a break from this negative drip feed and avoid them completely for one week. You may find, like I have, that they have no place in your life after that. Trust me, you won’t miss them.

That’s five, quick tips for you to help fight stress, depression and anxiety. Please give them a try; they’ll all help to boost your mood levels very quickly indeed.
