I have a lot of stress regarding my relationship, and I’m looking for some advice / reassurance.?

I’ll try to keep it short.

My girlfriend and have been dating for a little over a year and a month. She’s definitely the kind of woman who knows what she wants, so we quickly went through the relationship chain, ending with me proposing at about 11 months. Unfortunately, circumstances have pulled us apart for the next year or so, but we agreed that we’d both stay faithful and work through the issues of a long-distance relationship together. However, since we’ve been apart, an incredible amount of stress has developed. Since I’ve been away, she’s had serious issues dealing with stress, getting to the point where she lets even the small stuff ruin the rest of her day. I’ve always been the one better at dealing with stress, but the constant amount of stress and bad emotions coming through our AIM / phone conversations is constantly piling up on my shoulders, alongside my own mountains of stress. And honestly, I’m starting to crack.

So, my question: Is this serious amount of stress a sign that maybe we’re not meant to be? Or is this somewhat normal of an intense long-distance relationship? Should I wait around for her to handle stress better? Or is it more an issue with how I’m handling listening to her stress?

Look……I really want this to work out. I love her more than anything, and I’ve been trying to resolve this to the best of my ability, but the amount of stress doesn’t seem to be decreasing at all. So, I’m either looking for a second opinion (if I just have my head in the clouds and I’m missing an important fact), or some suggestions for a solution. Either way, I’d appreciate it.

Thanks.

Relax With Some Soothing Music

All of us like listening to music and each one of us has an individualistic preferences. We have at times listened to the Go-Gos in a car or sang the Melody; ourselves at our graduation. We may have listened to Ode to Joy at a wedding and heard Bruce Springsteen or Madonna while in college. Even though tastes differ, each one of us listens to music and has a favorite type of music and a favorite singer or band.

Music is not only fun but also gratifying. It has a soothing effect on the listener and calms the nerves. Music touches our lives in various ways that are sometimes conspicuous and sometimes subtle. And that is the reason why it is uncommon to find someone who does not listen to any kind of music.

Dentists play music in their waiting rooms and clinics. Many operation theatres have channel music running. Drivers prefer to drive through a maze of unending traffic while listening to music and even baseball players have been known to hum along during warm-up. These days most corporate houses have unobtrusive instrumental music playing in their offices all the time. This reduces job stress.

It seems that the reason why music has a comforting effect on us is because it reminds us of the first time we heard it in our mothers womb. Thus it provides us with a sense of security and well being. Many researches have been done on the physiological aspect of music and it has been discovered that Celtic or Native American music wherein the flute dominates is most relaxing. The serotonin in the body increases with the effect of music and this provides us with a feeling of elevation. Music also is known to reduce the heart rate and increase body temperature. In fact it has also been found out that any kind of music performed in person helps to put the left and the right brain in sync. Those performing also go through a cathartic effect and get a sense of accomplishment.

There are ways in which one can enhance this effect of music. The best way to de-stress yourself is to lie back with a pair of headphones and become a part of the music. Select music that has a pace slower than 72 minutes per minute. This will ease your heartbeat and relax you. Combine music with your morning walk and you will feel doubly rejuvenated by combining the goodness of exercise and music.

Sounds of nature are music to the ears and they can have a similar effect. Sit back on the garden bench and hear the music of the birds, the cricket, the wind and the rustling leaves. You can also find the sounds of the woods or the ocean captured in a CD these days.

Choose any kind of music that you like for relaxation. It is important that you enjoy the general hum and beat of the chosen music to be able to extract the maximum benefit. In our normal lives, we tend to get too busy in our past paced lives to take enough advantage of this cathartic effect of euphony.

Stuck in a Jam? Stressed? Then Make Some Music

For those who live in the suburbs but work in the city centers or the hubs of all the traffic, we spend alot of time stuck in traffic jams. 2 hours in a car to get to work? 2 hours in a car to get back from work. That’s a long time to spend in a car.

Some people take it in their stride, telling themselves that it’s the nature of city life, that this it’s not happening only to me, but also to the guy in the car next to me and the lady in the car in front of me. So why get so worked up?

But others can’t. The anger slowly starts to build up, to bubble over. The stress levels rise, the ease of losing their temper becomes so low that even being overtaken by an old lady in a beat up car is too much.

And they lose it. But there are plenty of ways to keep your anger in check. Below I’ve listed a few that could be easily done in the car.

Listen To Some Mood Lifting Music

Let’s face it, there’s not much you can do in the car. You can’t read a book (unless you want to have an accident). You can’t really talk on the phone for the whole traffic jam either (unless you want a massive phone bill and you still might have an accident) so what else is there to do?

Well listening to music might be a good option. You can listen to the radio, just switch to your favorite station and you’re good to go for the next 2 hours. But the problem with radio is there are a lot of adverts that play on the radio stations (it’s how they make their money after all) and sometimes there’s a lot of talking between songs (they hire DJs to keep people entertained, not just to press ‘next’ on the CD player).

This may or may not keep you in a positive, relaxed mood.

So my suggestion would be to burn yourself a CD or load up your car with a huge list of MP3s. And not just any old MP3s but a list of songs that make you feel happy, relaxed, uplifted, or all of the above.

Each person has their own tastes in uplifting music so I can’t tell you what to put on your song list. You may feel happy when listening to the Spice Girls, Metallica or even Michael Jackson. Anything will do.

My personal choice? I feel relaxed when listening to ‘Michael Buble – Kissing a fool’.

No Music? Then Make Some

Know the lyrics to a song that you really love to hear? Does it make you feel happy? Uplifted? But you forgot to bring that CD?

Then just let loose and sing!

Do you really care about the stranger in the car next to yours giving you a funny look as you sing along to Mariah Carey? Who cares? He/she will be gone in the next few minutes and you probably won’t ever see them again.

Take my advice, doing something to relieve your stress or curb your anger is much more valuable to your mental health than caring about what you look like singing in the car.

So whether you are listening to music, or even making your own music, choose positive, uplifting songs. They’ll keep your stress levels low, your anger in check and that jam will pass by in no time at all.

Heck, you may even look forward to driving to work in the morning! Give it a try and see.
