12 Ways to Reduce your Stress

The holidays finally are over, but stress is always with us. So it’s important to find ways to reduce it. “Different people swear by different things,” says Kathryn Bishopric, a registered nurse at South Miami Hospital’s Behavioral and Collaborative Medicine Program, which offers medical and behavioral anti-stress approaches, from yoga and tai chi to massage and art therapy.

She and Dr. Miguel Almunia, a psychiatrist consulting with the program, run through a dozen different methods of stress relief and explain how they work.

Exercise: It helps the body process and excrete adrenaline and cortisol, two chemicals the adrenal gland creates when the body is under stress. And it stimulates the pituitary gland and hypothalamus to create those feel-good peptides we fondly call endorphins. Endorphins reduce pain and induce a sense of well-being.

Distraction: See a movie. Go fishing. Stop and smell the roses. Doctors aren’t sure what goes on chemically, but PET scans can measure how it moves your brain waves into the relaxed alpha state. You’re awake, but no longer hyper-alert, no longer obsessing about the problem at hand. Computer fans call it rebooting the brain.

Laughter: It’s more than distraction; it has the almost instantaneous effect of relaxing the brain, and it can be measured by EEGs, Ms. Bishopric says. “A good laugh literally affects the entire brain; very little else does that,” she says.

Crying: Tears of sadness or frustration contain, and thus excrete, toxic chemicals that do not occur in the tears from, say, chopping an onion, Ms. Bishopric says. “Laughing is still better than crying – unless you really need a good cry.”

Sleep: It also reboots the brain. A good eight hours is essential, according to studies comparing the performance of rested people to that of tired people pumped up on coffee. Tired folks have less intellectual ability, more irritability, even depression. Doctors are so impressed they’re even (occasionally) cutting the 36-hour-shifts they used to demand of interns.

Diet: Stressed people become hungry for the comfort of high-sugar, high-fat foods. But these burn off quickly, leaving them edgy, irritable and even more stressed. Fight stress with a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and protein. Supplements, especially B vitamins and minerals, can help if you have an incomplete diet. But a good diet is better.

Meditation: In “agnostic mindfulness meditation,” people are taught not to empty their minds but to focus them, to pay more attention to the task at hand. Think of Shaq when he’s in the zone. He might even make a free throw.

Another type of meditation is religious. From a medical perspective it is a relaxation state. Some say prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to Him.

Yoga, tai chi: These combine meditation and exercise plus another crucial factor, social support. Some say we have three families, a family of origin (parents, siblings), a family of nurture (spouse and kids), and a family of choice (yoga class).

The latter is made up of people who are unrelated but whom we like to be with. An American Psychological Association study says people with the most supportive relationships rebounded best from the traumatic stress of 9/11.

Wine: In small amounts, it can help you relax, “but it’s not recommended as a medication,” Dr. Almunia says. Chemically, it’s a depressant. It will sedate you and later have a rebound stimulant effect. So it’ll put you to sleep, but wake you an hour later. Use with care.

Herbal teas: A nice brew of ginseng, for instance, can relax you, Dr. Almunia says. “I do believe they have a calming effect; it’s been documented through the ages.” Herbs such as St. John’s Wort or valerian are for depression, not anxiety, he says, and may interact with drugs.

Aromatherapy: It can help, he says. Burning cinnamon, vanilla or other flavors of oil or incense relaxes some people. “It could be both physical and mental.”

Drugs: Don’t turn here for relief of temporary stress, Dr. Almunia says. These are for longer-term, more serious anxieties. If you’re in that category, see your doctor.

Teaching Yoga for Stress Management – Stress Relief for Teenagers

Yoga practice has realistic solutions for stressed-out teenagers. Young people need to take time out for non-competitive and wholesome activities, such as Yoga. When teens have a chance to explore themselves from within, this is time well spent.


There has never been a time when teenagers were subjected to more stress than right now. Reuters Health reported, “One third of US teens say they feel stressed-out on a daily basis.” This was based upon a study of over 8,000 teens, and young adults, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.


For adults who lack compassion, for young people trying to cope in our society, consider this: The leading cause of death in teens and youths, ages 10 to 19 years old, is “teenage suicide.” Stress can place young people at risk. According to the US Department of Justice, “It is estimated that 500,000 teenagers try to kill themselves each year.”


The sources of the reasons for teenage stress, on such a massive scale, is subject to theory, but let’s take a look some of the reasons why so many young adults and teenagers are at risk. Family units are challenged, because many teens live in single parent families.


Parents work so much that “bonding time” is compromised. Peer pressure has always been part of the back drop in finding one’s self as a teenager. Technology also plays a role in pushing teens further than ever before.


Sure they are privileged to have access to so much information, but they also suffer from information overload. On top of this, high expectations are placed on teens for social status, academic performance, athletic performance, performance in the entertainment industry, etc.


So how can Yoga help teens to cope with stress? Regular teen Yoga sessions, or classes, should contain physical posturing (asanas), Yogic breathing (pranayama), laughing, positive affirmations, and learning to create an automatic relaxation response on a daily basis.


Teens must learn to reserve regular “Yoga time” for themselves. Working part-time, studying for SATs, getting a date for a prom, and preparing for college, are part of becoming a young adult, but there needs to be time to constructively “unplug” from all of it.


Yoga delivers mental clarity to all practitioners. Teens can learn to pursue one short-term goal at a time. This will make daily life much more manageable. Teens should learn various Yogic relaxation techniques, such as body scanning, stage-by-stage relaxation, and progressive muscle relaxation.


Physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health, can be restored by learning to accept oneself, as is. Teens can condition and prepare themselves to realize that they will not be in control of every situation life throws at them. Open discussions with their peers, after a Yoga session, in support groups, teen meetings, after school activities, or a public speaking class, will strengthen teen social skills and character.

How to Meditate For Powerful Stress Relief

How many times have you felt overwhelmed, panicky, or chased through your day by obligations, deadlines, work demands, children, relationships, bills, illness, you name it. How many times have you read or been told to relax, and stop worrying about _____ that is bothering you? How many times has that worked?


It is impossible to simply stop worrying when you experience involuntary hormonal and biochemical changes. This automatic stress response, also called the fight-or-flight reaction, puts your body in alarm mode: heart rate speeds up, breath becomes shallow, and our muscles tense. When the source of the stress is not life threatening, your body stays in an extended state of tension and eventually begins to take on illness from the stress response.


The only way out of this stress response cycle is to change your focus.


Meditation used correctly changes your focus and soothes the physiological response, easing the fight or flight reaction.


Many students of meditation seeking higher awareness meditate by emptying the mind. This may work for you, but if you are experiencing stress, and simply empty your mind when you meditate, the pile of problems may be waiting for you at the end of the meditation.


The focused meditation, as an alternative to the “empty mind” meditation, can be an effective tool to de-stress. Now remember your feelings associated with that memory. Focus on the joy you felt, on the subtle vibration of anticipation in your body over opening a gift, going to the park, or whatever is specific to your memory. Now carry that feeling into your present and associate it with a positive image you want in your life today.


You can use relaxation music or empowering music, too. With relaxation music, you ca reduce your heart rate and deepen your breathing. An excellent effect.


Most importantly, experiment. Your body will tell you what you need if you trust it.


If this seems silly to you, keep in mind the natural world works around this law of attraction. Take a look at a grove of trees or a field of grass or a flock of birds. There is a natural grouping of like species. The same applies to thoughts – like begets like.


Your focus on positive images and feelings will attract more positive images and feelings. Eventually these translate into positive actions and things. Using focused meditation elevates the electrical vibrations in your body and mind. It can literally change your life.

Treat Panic Attacks With Stress Release Techniques

How to relax and reduce stress levels to treat panic attacks

Stress is the main reason for anxiety and panic attacks. That is why it’s extremely important to reduce your stress levels.

I have learned those techniques while I was searching for a solution for my own anxiety attacks. Here are some amazing stress relief techniques I have found. You can use them to prevent attacks in the future.

1. Breathing exercise: One of the simplest stress relief techniques to relax yourself anytime anywhere is breathing exercises. When people have an anxiety or panic attacks they usually begin taking shallow breaths which lead to low amount of oxygen and feeling of weakness or dizziness. All you need to do in this exercise is breathe deeply and slowly. Remember to Inhale from you nose and exhale from your mouth.

2. Muscle relaxation & meditation: Even though a lot of religions use meditation I really have no direct connection to them. It is simply stress relief technique that can help you <b>treat panic attacks</b> better. To begin the meditation all you need to do is to go to a quiet place and try not to think about anything. Empty your mind from any thought. When you feel totally relaxed you can start the muscle relaxation. Flex each muscle in your body, one after another. Your hands, back stomach, legs etc. Each time flex them for three 3 seconds and than slowly release.

3. Imagery: Go to a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. Than, imagine a place where you feel perfectly safe (For example: Beach, forest or even your home). All the tension in your life completely fades away. Now concentrate on every little detail in your imagination. Pay attention to the smells, sounds, temperature, the sensation on your skin, and even the way you feel at that moment. Do this until you feel completely relax. I recommend that you do this technique over and over again every day until you begin to feel the change. This should prevent anxiety and panic attacks. If you can’t get relaxed by the images that you, just change them.

Easy to Practice Stress Relief

We all know how great we feel and look when we wear that special outfit or amazing pair of shoes. It’s as if we are floating on an air of confidence. We look good and know it. Clothing can do amazing wonders for a person’s self esteem. And, put it together with that perfect hair style and the amazing make over, what could be better?

Well, be it important for us to feel great and look great on the outside, it’s even more important to take care of what is on the inside. Taking care of the mind, body and spirit in addition to your physical appearance is a feeling so few people know. Most often, we tend to focus all our energies on either the physical or the well-being of the body as a whole.

The major reason we only focus on one key factor is that most often we have the misconception that we do not have enough time thus we deal with what we believe is more important. And, of course as individuals we all have things in our lives that take priority over other things.

However, caring for the inner self is not as difficult nor as time consuming as most people make it out to be. This was an amazing lesson I had to learn through some very life altering events. How did I do it? Well, I took baby steps and I’m anxious to share with you my journey of inner well-being.

One of the best things that ever happened upon me were a couple of tools that I used faithfully. They covered every aspect of what I wanted to heal. These tools covered my mind, body, home, health and spiritual well being. A book “Heal Thyself for Health & Longevity”, added easy & simple clarity. I used this books when first starting out and continue to use it daily. I’m 41 years old and with the use of this book, I look as if I’m in my early 30′s. So, let’s go over what worked for me step by step and hopefully you can take some of these tips and apply them to your well-being. Please keep in mind that I’m sharing these tips that worked for me and this is not to be considered professional medical advice. As with any health and well being endeavor, it is always best to speak to your doctor to ensure whatever program you begin is safe for you.

And, I must admit that I have mentioned this book to every woman in my family and because of my big mouth, have purchased the book at least 17 times within a year. Mainly because after everyone had seen and noticed the difference in me, they wanted the secret. And, being the person I am, I’d give them my copy. I even had a lady steal a copy from me on the plane while on vacation as I let her read it while we were traveling.

However, moving along about this book and what it taught me. First and foremost, it taught me that our body is a temple as well as our home. And, that with any new endeavor, it takes preparation in order to master it. But, with this book, the preparation was simple because there are so many things we all have at home that allows us to implement many of the tips in the books.

I’m not going into the entire healing process I took, but I will share with you in this article my favorite step and how I started. As I continue to post more articles, I will go through the other steps as well, but your best source is to actually get the book.

It is always easy to start a program based on things that are easy to do. Which is what I’m primarily guilty of. Basically, we all figure that our lives are so full, we just don’t have the time for complications and of course we all want immediate gratification.

Well, hydrotherapy for me was the easiest thing to start with. With the assistance of Heal Thyself for Health and Longevity, I followed the steps that Queen Afua outlined. The reason hydrotherapy was so very easy for me was because it was something I already did. Actually, it’s something we all do in our need to feel clean. We all take baths and showers.

Hydrotherapy on a deeper level however, offered me relaxation, detoxing, less stress and an amazing feeling of cleanliness. Queen Afua basically suggested a few items to help achieve the deepest level of hydrotherapy experiences and it was easy for me to obtain these items because I already loved the items suggested. My favorites were the oils. However, I learned that the quality of oils make a huge difference and the type of oil has various results.

My days were always so full that when arriving home after a long work day, I’d have problems unwinding and going to sleep. Thus with the help of the hydrotherapy sessions, I discovered that all of those issues could be resolved with Lavendar oil.  Outlined below is just one of my quick hydrotherapy techniques, but keep in mind that I use many techniques as outlined in the book.

A. Make the bathroom serene
1. Light white unscented candles
2. Turn of the lights
3. Have a plant in your bathroom such as a fern
4. Have a battery operated CD player and smooth jazz or classical CD’s
5. Run a bathtub full of water as hot as you can stand it
6. After the tub is full, add approx. 7 drops of pure lavendar oil
7. While playing the soothing music, ease into the tub and lay back
8. Raise your legs to approx. a 45 degree angle
9. Now close your eyes and let the music consume your mind
10. Relax in this state for approx. 15 minutes
11. You will notice yourself perspiring which is good as your body is detoxing
12. After 10 minutes or longer if you are more stressed, let the water out
13. Now run your shower with cool water (not cold) and stand for 2 minutes
14. This will close your pores back up and keep you from catching colds
15. And, you are finished, you should be able to sleep well.

It is important to drink plenty of water while doing this as your body perspires, you will lose fluids which should be replaced. In addition, the water provides clear skin, improved internal functionality and assists in weight loss. Not only does this hydrotherapy method relieve stress, but it allows your body to naturally detox.

As you become familiar with the book, you will learn other techniques, but this is the quickest for releasing stress and it’s as previously mentioned, something we all do on a normal basis.

Breathing properly is something I cannot emphasize enough. When you get stressed often it develops into anxiety or worse, a full blown panic attack. The main reason is because when we stress our breathing tends to become short. Focus on taking slow deep breaths and exhaling slowly over a couple of minutes. Consider this a stress relief exercise.
